RoWaMag: Big Milestone for THEVA

2021-11-19T16:05:26+01:00November 19th, 2021|

The RoWaMag project started on 01.04.2019, with the goal to develop a robust and low-maintenance magnetic heater with HTS conductors of the second generation. The project aims to prove the technical and economic suitability of the magnetic heater. The use of superconductors reduces electrical losses in the drive train by 30% compared with conventional methods. Up to 120 kWh can thus be saved per ton of aluminum when heated to 520 °C. THEVA is supplying the core component in this project - the superconducting magnet. Four coils were wound and cast from approximately 4,000 m of HTS tape. The coils were then tested in liquid nitrogen (77 K) for their critical current and showed no degradation. In the next step, the coils were built into the casing, which was provided by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Three of the four coils built were used for this purpose, with one serving as a reserve. THEVA also attached the superconducting current leads to the copper contacts. This coil package was handed over to KIT on November 8, 2021. Now the installation in the cryostat and the commissioning as well as the long-term test will take place at Bültmann. Commissioning is planned for April 2022. The project will be followed by a possible commercialization of the magnetic heater.

Project start FILAMENTS4FUSION

2021-11-11T16:40:16+01:00November 2nd, 2021|

We are excited to announce that our new FILAMENTS4FUSION project has been funded by the Eurostars commission and started in October 2021. The FILAMENTS4FUSION project aims to make an important impact on green energy production through development of high temperature superconductors with 3D filaments. These superconducting tapes will be tailored specifically for tokamak fusion magnets and alternating current applications, such as electrical power cables. This project thus aims to demonstrate high yield fabrication of high current carrying capacity superconductor tape with 3D filaments enabling minimal alternating current losses, and minimal mechanical hoop stress effects at high magnetic fields. Scalability and cost effectiveness is ensured by employing 3D-profile metal tapes from SUBRA in combination with THEVA’s unique inclined substrate deposition. “The combined excellent competences of this dedicated project team is key to obtain the main goal of this project - introducing a low cost, high performance and high yield superconductor technology to the market”; Anders C. Wulff, project manager and CEO of SUBRA A/S. The project started on October 1st 2021 and will run until June 2024. The project is a collaboration between four project partners: SUBRA A/S (Denmark, coordinator), THEVA (Germany), ETCH A/S (Denmark) and the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (Slovak Republic).

Superconductors with record performance for magnetic field applications

2022-01-31T15:38:44+01:00August 27th, 2021|

Ismaning, August 27, 2021 - After two years of intensive development, THEVA has introduced a new high-temperature superconductor (HTS) wire type of its Pro-Line product group. Embedded nanoparticles increase the magnetic field strength by more than double, so that higher fields can be achieved in more compact magnetic coils. The conductor thus surpasses all conventional superconductors used to date and also the first-generation (1G) high-temperature superconductors. It thus opens up completely new perspectives for the realization and use of high magnetic fields in research and technology. Read more about our new product with artificial pinning in our press release.
